Rhwng 1880 – 1920 pan roedd ‘na 47 o dafarnau yn y dre. Wnaeth o ddeud

ymweld ac yn aros yn y Llew Coch. Cafodd ei berswadio i ddangos ei
ddyletswyddau a bron marw. A hanes Thomas Jones oedd wedi ennill y
“Military Medal”. Cafodd ei gyflwyno i Edward Tywysog Cymru. Wnaeth Thomas
“MM” wrthod ysgwyd llaw a fo – achos roedd o’n anhapus iawn ynglyn a’r
driniaeth o’r goroeswyr rhyfel.
Roedd y noson yn ardderchog. Roedd Geraint yn siarad yn Gymraeg ac yn

Past Events
Dance With Pen-Tennyn
16th May 2008.
There were about 90 people
there, I think members and guests. We had a good evening. The dancing
was better this time, perhaps because people know “CHWITH” and “DDE” by
now. Also we learned new words and we were able to follow instructions,
Bryn was enthusiastic and worked hard with us. Member’s comments were
good and everyone enjoyed themselves. We are grateful to all the Welsh
Speakers for their conversation and to the “Brwdd yr Iaith”. It was a
pity that more learners didn’t attend.
St
Davids Day at Ruthin Castle 1st March 2008.
Eighty one of us
met up on the afternoon of St David’s Day, for tea at the Castle, served
in the banqueting hall on long tables. The Baron and Baroness (Jeff and
Myfi) were crowned to open the proceedings. There were other Clwb
members sat at the top table along with “Dewi Sant!” Tea was served and
enjoyed by all, after we had eaten Myfi said a few words and “Dewi Sant”
addressed us and sang his own words to the tune of Calon lân. Our Hostess (Myron,
from the Castle) told us something of the history of the castle and the
banquets. Angharad showed us some Clog dancing steps. Myron sang us some
traditional Welsh songs, with one in English.
All in All a very
pleasant day!!! (More Photos)
An evening with Nan and Sian – A History of the Welsh Language:
This was a good
evening. At the start we were asked to choose a picture from the table –
a picture of some significance to our learning of Welsh – then Sian
invited us to say a bit about it to the group in
either Welsh or English. This prepared the way for Nan to give us a short illustrated talk
on the history of the Welsh language. This was very interesting and
surprising to some of us. The good news is that the percentage of people
speaking Welsh has now started to go increase.
Thanks to Nan and
Sian.

A night
with Nick at the White Horse, Llanfair.
Well, what a
night! People enjoyed the poetry, the songs, the

games, the quiz and the
company in general. Nick spoke very quickly but in Welsh and English so we
could understand well.
He started by saying that we should not think of
ourselves as learners, but rather as people who speak “Welsh as a second
language” encouragement for us. He had learned Welsh himself. We
started the night playing a game with beanags, we had to throw them around
the circle whilst shouting

our names, then other new words – to learn
them. Then we played “Bingo Pobl” we had to ask people questions to find
out who liked Indian food, who could touch their toes……
This was very
difficult, fortunately each group had a welsh speaker to help them. Rhoda
made Bara Brith “Very Tasty” people said. Rhoda and I think we will make
the perfect Bara Brith recipe for Clwb Llanllwen.

A quiz in the White Horse.
18/04/07
Tŷ Mawr A meeting of about 25 members who listened to a talk by
Geraint Owain.
(Photos)
on
the subject of Pubs in Ruthin and the effects of world war 1 on some of
the Ruthin volunteers. A fascinating talk – given in both Welsh and
English. Geraint traced the history of the town pubs from c 13th- through
the ‘golden period’ between 1880 and 1920 when there were 47 pubs in the
town. Lots of interesting facts about the trade and many anecdotes including one
when a visiting hangman, staying at the Red Lion, was persuaded to
demonstrate his duties – and nearly died in the attempt! Geraint also told of Thomas Jones who had won the Military Medal, and was
know as Thomas MM, being presented to Edward Prince of Wales (1920s). The
photo clearly shows this – and that Thomas MM refused to shake the Princes
hand ~ because of the appalling way survivors had been treated. An excellent evening – content and delivery. Just right we understood
every word.
29/03/07
Bingo at
Corwen.
A full
house! There were at least 33 people in the hall, with much concentration
as we completed our bingo cards. Winners had to read out (in Welsh), their
winning numbers before receiving a prize – so good practice all round.
18/03/07
Treasure
Hunt. Good Idea! Shame about the Weather!!
Many thanks to Jan for her
good idea and the hard work in writing the clues. We had a treasure hunt
around Ruthin Jan gave us 4 pages of clues to follow- which quickly became
a soggy mess, and impossible to write on,as the blizzard raged.

Nevertheless we completed the circuit taking refuge in the Seven Eyes at
the end to thaw out!!
01/03/07
St Davids
Day Dance.
Who has
two left feet? I think the majority of us there especially for the
attempted square dance!! We were joined by the Young Farmers (Some very
young). Music and Calling from Pen Tennyn. Thanks to all involved.
22/02/07
Skittles
at the “Drovers”- Rhewl
Men
versus Women (I’m told) with a good deal of competition. The men won –
perhaps their previous cricketing or squash skills played a part. Any
rematch will see the teams more evenly balanced.
25/01/07
Dinner
Santes Dwynwen
Another evening
at the Woodlands Hall, this time to celebrate Santes Dwynwens’ day, proved
to be as successful as the Christmas Dinner (helping to serve as an
overflow night. Again the food was excellent thanks to Jan for the
arrangements.
17/01/07
Raptors
and Reptiles
Jane
gave us an interesting talk (in Welsh) about the animals received for
care. “Don’t keep these animals as pets” was the message, and why. We saw
tortoises, snakes and heard about others. Apart from the Kestrel which
flew up onto a beam and was unwilling to comedown, all the animals were
well behaved.
